The site-specific video installation ‘8,83×7,2’ was made for Zaal 5 at the Filmhuis Den Haag, The Hague in 2007.
The video shows the view one is confronted with if looking outside from the exhibition space, as if everything around it was burning – the images show the city of The Hague in flames. In the foreground of the imagery one can see the structure of the windows of the building, creating the illusion of actually looking outside the building. Within the exhibition space one can hear the sound of a roaring fire. Pillows and headphones are placed in front of the projection. Through the headphones one can listen to the recorded sounds from the staged urban scenery in front of the viewer, creating two distinctive layers of sound.
The image of a city in flames triggers associations with terrorism and disaster in a cinematographic way, especially given the location in the heart of the governmental district. I like to play with this particular powerful image, focusing on the aspects of beauty and the sublime.
The work was also exhibited at Zaal 5 during the Todays Art Festival 2007.
